What Should I Expect When I Rent a Storage Unit?

Prepare ahead of time to make self storage a seamless experience

No need to worry about getting stuck while you’re getting started. For your first self storage unit, you’ll select the size and style of storage unit that best fits your needs either online, in person, or over the phone. Once you’ve given your information and secured your rental, most facilities will set up a move-in date.

On the day of your move-in, bring your driver’s license or other identification and meet with the facility manager, who will walk you through your rental agreement. The rental agreement usually outlines rules and policies for the facility and gives information about when rent is due. Once you’ve signed, you’re ready to move in!

Expect to receive a gate code (or install a smartphone app for facilities that use gate apps). You can always get your gate code from the facility manager again if you lose it. Bring a sturdy lock for your storage unit and you’re ready to start storing!

Things to Know Before Renting a Storage Unit

Get prepared for your self storage rental. Here’s what first-time renters need to know:

You Rent Month-to-Month

Self storage rentals operate on a month-to-month basis. You’re not locked into staying, meaning you can move out when you no longer need your storage unit. Most facilities don’t prorate rent, though, so once you’ve paid for a month, the unit is yours until you move out.

Airtight Containers Protect Your Belongings

Regardless of the storage unit type or size you choose, store smaller items in airtight containers that you can seal. They’ll stay in better condition and reduce the risk of damage. A bag of Damprid can also protect your belongings from humidity while they’re stored.

Consider Walkways, Not Raw Space

Just looking at the area your belongings take up and then selecting the smallest storage unit size that will fit them may lead to difficulty accessing them later. If you plan on reaching specific belongings while they’re stored, make sure to account for leaving aisles you can walk down and carry boxes through!

Choosing a Storage Unit Type

With a variety of storage unit types, choose the style that fits your needs!

Many people looking for quick, direct access to their belongings select a drive-up storage unit, sometimes called outdoor storage. You can park right in front of a drive-up storage unit, saving you time and energy while moving homes or renovating. These storage units are best for short-term storage, durable items, or outdoor sporting goods that you’ll access often.

For better protection, people storing long-term choose a climate-controlled storage unit. These storage units regulate their internal temperatures to keep belongings in better condition. They’re a great fit for items sensitive to harsh temps or humidity like documents, appliances, or musical instruments.

Some facilities only offer one type of storage unit, but it’s good to talk to the manager of your facility of choice about what you’re storing and for how long. They can offer some tips for how to keep your items in the best shape!
